We are NOT “All in one Accord” it Seems

Sigh, just when you think your interactions with law enforcement are waning, you get ‘that call’.  I had to think “this is awkward” as I was getting hauled around in the back of a police cruiser, but I’m getting ahead of myself.  I want to report on yet another Turo incident that really separates the sheep from the chaff.

I know we’ve been hard on some of our customers, but with this event there WAS NO customer!  My trusting son, Colin, seems to think it is best to just leave the doors of our vehicles unlocked.  This invites non-paying ‘customers’ to simply drive off.  I’m afraid the scripture that says if someone takes your coat, you should give them your cloak also will soon have us sending these ‘customers’ off with a hot cup of coffee next time.

Anyway, Colin was checking to make sure the Honda Accord was ready for a customer coming in from Denver, when he noticed the Accord was sitting at some guy’s condo in one of the rougher neighborhoods of Peoria (recall GPS module in each of our cars).  He did what any guy would do who has the equivalent IQ of a walnut.  Call Dad.  After considering who got us into this mess of a business, I promptly told him he had NO chance of getting me involved.

So, there I am sitting across the street from our Honda Accord, having verified that it was indeed our car and that no other customers would likely have it (refer to previous blog post that is incredibly embarrassing).  I call the police and they send a very jovial policeman who sat there and laughed.  He said ‘if it’s yours, take it.  I’ll cover ya.’  Yikes.

I approached the car, wondering how my obituary would read.  I found the key we stash on the outside of the car, making me wonder once again why we have it when Colin leaves the doors unlocked all the time.  I open the door, while the cop is still laughing.  Having avoided being shot thus far, I told him I was now worried about my pickup while we drive away.  His brilliant idea was to drive the Accord and the cruiser a mile down the road, haul me back in the cruiser (see aforementioned ride in the back of a police cruiser and image below), and fetch the pickup.  This we did.  But, now I’m worried about a guy waking up and being frustrated his stolen car was stolen.  Poor guy.  I should have left my cloak.
